Building an LGBTQ Friendly Community

Picture
Is your community LGBTQ friendly?  Do members of the LGBTQ community take an active role in community events?  Do members of the LGBTQ community feel welcome and safe?  Are there services for members of the LGBTQ community?  In other words, are they allowed to thrive in your area?  Does your community endorse the concept of civil rights for everyone?  For any community to be healthy and happy, these things must be considered.

Twelve Things that can be done to make a community  LGBTQ friendly.
  1. Start organizations such as PFLAG.
  2. Make sure that local legislation has non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
  3. In the public/civil sector (gov't and education) include benefits for gay/lesbian couples.
  4. School non-discrimination language should include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
  5. Schools should have an anti-bullying policy that includes sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
  6. Have GSA's or similar programs active in schools.
  7. Schools and public buildings should provide gender-neutral bathroom/shower facilities.
  8. Ensure supportive involvement from Churches, Businesses, and the Chamber of Commerce.
  9. Health and care-giving professionals should be able and willing to accommodate members of the LGBT community.
  10. Establish an LGBTQ Community Center.
  11. Elect members of the LGBTQ community and its supporters to office.
  12. Work toward educating the community on LGBTQ issues/have public outreach.
